Every Tuesday, sales expert Andy Bounds shares his top tips to improve your sales and communications. This week’s is…
Making communication fun
If I asked you to produce a list of words to describe the communication in your company, what would you say?
And, how many words would you use before you thought of the word ‘fun’?
I imagine a lot, because – let’s face it – ‘fun’ isn’t something that people tend to prioritise… even though it makes their communications more… well, fun!
Making communication fun is one of those activities that (1) makes a big impact whilst (2) not being hard to do. For instance, you could:
• Think of communication you’ve enjoyed, and use something similar
• When running team meetings, involve people who you know to be fun
• Link your messages to topics you know others find interesting – their hobbies etc.
• Introduce ice-breakers
• Do interactive exercises
• Use relevant jokes – if you feel comfortable doing so
We’re not looking to be flippant or inappropriate here. And there are certainly some communications where ‘fun’ will be the opposite of what was wanted. But it’s often worth considering ‘what one thing can I include today, to make it more fun for them?’
Action Point
What meeting / presentation have you got coming up which would benefit from being more fun? Which of the above – or something different – could you incorporate, to enliven things for everyone… including you?
